Romans chapter 2 is a section where the Apostle Paul, after nakedly revealing the sin of the Gentiles in the latter half of chapter 1, now confronts the wrong faith of religious people head-on.
This chapter sequentially reveals the hypocrisy of the religious person who judges others, the stubbornness that despises God’s goodness, God’s justice that repays according to what has been done, the judgment according to the presence or absence of the law, the accusation and excuse of the conscience, the contradiction between teaching and doing, and the powerlessness of circumcision carved in the flesh. And finally, it reaches the conclusion that “only the one who has received circumcision in the heart is a true Jew.”
This chapter is a stepping stone for the gospel of receiving justification by faith alone that will be presented next, and makes it clear that only the person who accepts the gospel of the water and the Spirit with the heart can stand before God’s righteous judgment.
